This week has been a challenging week on many fronts but there has also been a lot of good! Let’s give a shout out to the over 150 custodial and maintenance staff who worked around the clock to keep our buildings in top shape! They worked on frozen pipes, clearing parking lots and sidewalks, plowed snow and maintained the HVAC units. Let’s give a shout out to the Principals and teachers from each building who worked to connect with each family ensuring safety and educational enrichment during this time. We had some fun this week! We loved seeing all the pictures of how families combined education with snow time fun. Tomorrow, Friday February 19 will be a remote teaching and learning day. Let’s finish this week strong, with positive energy and take the time to say thank you and encouraging words to each other. This is what make our community great!

Congratulations to the Har-Ber High School Fall Recipients of the Arkansas Seal of Biliteracy! The Arkansas Seal of Biliteracy is a certification that recognizes students who demonstrate proficiency in English and another language. The Seal was officially endorsed by the Arkansas Department of Education in June 2018, making Arkansas the 35th state to have an official Seal. Students across the country use the Seal as evidence for professional resumes, portfolios, and interviews, and for securing scholarships and higher pay. Students now also have the opportunity to apply for a Global Seal of Biliteracy! Details for the Global Seal can be found here. Since the Seal’s initiation in 2017, 1,668 World Language students have been awarded in Arkansas. With the 44 students recognized in December, Springdale Public Schools continues to lead the state with a total of 656! Spring testing and applications for the Arkansas Seal will begin in February - don't miss the opportunity! #2bilit2quit #aflta #thechoice #ARSB #ARbiliteracy @arbiliteracy @globalbilitseal @AvantAssessment

Megan S. & Carson B. achieved personal best times in her two events. Natalia R. had the fastest time for the Wildcats in the 100 fly. Yazzie L. swam two seconds faster in the 100 free and completed the 100 back. Max M. has been training hard and it paid off for him in the 200 free and going a best time in the 100 breast. Har-Ber High School is blessed with many amazing teachers. We want to congratulate Amy Martfeld who was selected as the 2019-2020 Har-Ber High School Teacher of the Year. Amy Martfeld goes above and beyond to support our students and our teachers. Amy is incredible and we are proud to have her as a member of the Wildcat family! We surprised Amy with a message that shows her how much we appreciate her service to Har-Ber!

Saylor Wilson joined the Har-Ber swim team during her freshman year but had to sit out of competitions due to joining the team mid-year. For any athlete that is never an easy task but she worked with her club coach and created a plan for her to continue to train. That plan set her up for a great sophomore year. Early on in the season she qualified for state in multiple individual events. This was her first year in the 6A Conference and she showed she means business by finishing 2nd in the Conference for the 100 breast and also earning a spot on the podium in the same event at State is a huge achievement. Which earned her the title of "Newcomer of the Year". Each meet she wasn't chasing swimmers, swimmers were trying to out touch her at the wall. Scoring the most individual points for the team earned her the right to be named this years, "Most Valuable Wildcat". To continue on, Coach Nathan Whitten said this, "Her journey to being a top swimmer in the state hasn't been easy but it has allowed her to grow as a student-athlete and realize you can only control your own narrative. Where most people would have been defeated from these past two years she continued to hone in on her goals at the pool in which got her on the podium at state." Congratulations to Saylor and her awards!

The Har-Ber FFA Veterinary Science team participated in a nationwide online career development event competition last week. This team placed first place! The top four individuals on our team were Izzy Sedrick, Cassia Cobb, Emily Bailey, and GG Diaz. Other team members include Sierra Harp, Max McGooden, Ava Crow, and Kaisha Ray. These students have spent many hours with each other and their coach virtually during the AMI time. Attached are two photos taken prior to school closure.

For the 19-20 season, Sarah Pope has earned the award of 'Wildcat of the Year Award' for Swim & Dive. This recognizes the student-athlete who isn't necessarily the fastest in the water but the person who is all-around a great teammate both in and out of the water. Coach Nathan Whitten says, “This award is the most prestigious award in my book because someone on the team can earn it by their actions. Everyone is fair game to earning this recognition. There was a time early on in the season where I asked Sarah to help the team by competing in the 500 free. It’s a race where she normally doesn’t compete and doesn’t really train for. However, she gave me the nod to put her in. That was a moment where she really rose to the occasion and especially as a sophomore it spoke volumes to me and her teammates. Everyone knows you have to be a little crazy to swim that race because of the distance. Yet, she was willing to step out of her comfort zone and model what it means to be a team player. Another great thing about her is if you are able to attend a swim meet or a practice you can always find her mentoring her peers who are new to the sport without being asked to. She takes the initiative and that is an attribute of a leader, it’s why she is the Wildcat of the Year!” Stay tuned for more Har-Ber Swim & Dive Shout outs!

As a finalist, Giselle and Raquel, are currently among the 10 students nationally vying for the $5,000 People’s Choice Prize. The public may cast their vote now through April 22nd.  We will also identify a first, second and third place prize – and Giselle and Raquel are still in the running for the $15,000 grand prize. To the Springdale Community, Student and staff health and safety is the number one concern of Springdale Public Schools. Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and Secretary of Education Johnny Key recommend school districts in counties without a presumptive case remain open in order to not disrupt community life, especially meal services for children and health services for all. The CDC guidance on COVID-19 is that short to medium duration school closings are not recommended. The major request is for good judgment be in place for hygiene for all students and staff along with social distancing. Springdale Public Schools will remain open.
